Definition Of Locksmith Key Codes – Lockaid
By Vic Hurlstorm | July 30, 2010
Key codes help locksmiths make keys. Key codes are also known as alphanumeric codes since they involve the use of letters and numbers. In order to provide a separate identity to each key, key codes are generated in a random manner. Locksmiths have the skills to decipher any lock’s key code and make a key to fit the lock.
There are several types of key codes used. One type is the direct digit key code. Each digit on this type of key code corresponds to a cut in the key. Several lock manufacturers list the key code on the key. Every digit is related to a pin on the key and thus, digit key codes are longer than other codes. The second type of key code is one in which there is a pattern between the code and the key. Mathematics is used in this key code and thus, it isn’t as simple as direct digit key codes. There is a third type of key code which is quite complex and requires a codebook to decipher it. Since the key doesn’t have any pattern that corresponds to the cuts, a locksmith will require a codebook. Due to the increasing use of computers, locksmiths can now buy computer programs to obtain more information on key codes. The software is copy-protected and is thus very secure.
The two types of locksmith key codes used are blind codes and bitting codes. Most key codes are blind key codes and a codebook or computer program is required to translate this blind code into a bitting code. However, for security purposes, only licensed locksmiths can have access to these codebooks and computer programs. To create a new key, locksmiths will use the bitting codes on blank keys.
This locksmith key coding system is being used almost everywhere. This system provides enhanced security since there is only one code used per key. Computers will never generate a code that has been created once and, hence, keys cannot be duplicated by error. You are thus assured that your property is safe as only you have the keys to the locks that protect it.
